Document I · The Founder’s Memo

The End of Priority.

A memo to anyone who builds with me.

I — What I am retiring

I am retiring a word. Then I am putting money where the word used to be.

The word is ‘priority.’ It has cost me more than any line on any budget I have signed.

It cost me SevenRooms. A year of prioritizing it. Still not finished.

It cost me Inventory. It cost me Costume. It cost me systems I asked good developers to build.

Every time I asked what was next, the answer was the same. Finish the priority first.

Then nothing finished. The priority moved. A new fire arrived. The good work drifted.

A year later I am writing the same email about the same feature. Everybody feels it. Nobody says it.

So we agree on a new priority and go home. That ends today.

Not paused. Not renamed. Rebranded. The only priority left is the man who chose our club tonight.

Finish these systems and he feels it. Leave them half built and he feels that too.

I will never answer “what is the priority?” again. I would rather find you help than rank your work.

II — Why the word fails

Sequence used to be destiny. Not anymore.

Priority made sense with one architect and one shipment leaving on Friday.

Gone.

A server spins up while you read this line. Staging is live before the meeting about the meeting.

Design, code, migration, rendering. The price collapsed. So did the excuse.

The only scarce thing left is management attention.

Hiding behind ‘priority’ pretends attention is smaller than it is.

The real bottleneck is simpler. We never learned to run many things at once. I am fixing that.

Ten things at once is not chaos anymore. It is Tuesday.

III — What replaces it

Three questions. They replace the word.

Instead of “what is the priority?”, bring me these three. For anything you own.

1. What is the deliverable?

Not the vision. Not ‘phase one.’ The thing that exists when you are done. A screen a manager uses at eleven at night. A number that moves on a dashboard. Something I can point at.

2. What is the lead time?

Not ‘soon.’ Not ‘next sprint.’ A date. If you cannot give a date yet, the first deliverable is the date.

3. What is in the way, and what is your plan?

Every real project has a wall. Bring it with two ways around it and the one you would take. I am inclined to solve it, not to stop.

What is not on that list

Money

If the work reached you, the money is settled. Bring the plan. A sound plan carries its own budget.

A rank against other projects

Everything that passed the test is moving at once. Nothing is ranked against anything.

‘One step at a time’

Steps are for stairs. We are not climbing stairs. We open tonight, and again tomorrow night.

Ask me for the help. Never ask me for the ranking.

IV — What this means if you build with me

You are not building the priority. You are building your piece of the night.

There is no priority on a Saturday. That is why Saturday works. It is the same every night we open. There is only one priority, and that is him.

Build everything else the way we run the night. Him at the centre. Nothing ranked above him.

Ten systems. All live. All improving. All pointed at one man.

You run your piece the way you would run your own company. You do not wait for me to say when.

If you own it, you decide what ‘done’ looks like. You bring me the three answers. I bring you the help.

V — What you get from me

Since I stopped ranking, I owe you more.

Here is the trade. Not a favour. The trade.

A decision inside twenty-four hours

You send the three answers. You get an answer. Yes, no, or the one thing I need clarified. Never a week of ‘let me think about it.’ If I cannot decide in a day, I owe you the date I will.

Money that is already approved

A tool, a hire, a supplier, a subscription. If the plan is sound, the money is part of the first conversation. Not the next one.

Help brought in when the wall is real

Freelancer, second developer, agency, credits, better tools. Name the blocker and I go find the help. That is my job now. It was never yours.

Cover when a bet does not land

Some of these will miss. That is what running everything at once means. Nobody loses standing here for an honest swing.

One more thing, for suppliers. I like working with friends. This is still show business.

It was never only about the money. Was it?

But show me the money. Show me what your work will earn us.

Then I will show you mine.

The old deal: you wait for me. The new deal: I move for you.

VI — Why now

The tools arrived. The excuse left.

People ask why the hurry. Because we can, and not everybody can.

What we sketched years ago can be built in weeks now. So we are building all of it.

I want to reinvent this club. New systems. New service. New show. New everything.

I get to reinvent myself along the way. That is the part I like most.

I am not going to work the old way anymore. I do not think you should either.

A ranked list only ever promises one thing. Something on it stays undone.

A priority list is a written promise that something will still be unfinished on the day I hand this over.

So the word goes tonight.

VII — Where this starts

Every open project is on the same clock. This week.

SevenRooms. Inventory. Costume. Content Radar. Call Tracker. The Kitchen. The door. The pool. The VIP rooms. This page.

All of it runs in parallel from this week.

None of them is the priority. All of them are. Which is the same thing.

The one priority is the guest. He is not on a roadmap. He is already in a taxi.

Everything else exists to make that night the one he chose us for.

Building any of it with me? Send me your three answers today. I will send mine back.

This will be fast, loud, and not always comfortable. My name is on all of it.

Jump in. The water is warm.
